Croatian vacation

We vacationed in Hvar, Croatia last week.  It was our first relaxing, fun-in-the-sun vacation in awhile.  Since we've moved to Norway our vacations have been go, go, go, see as much of this fabulous European location as you can while you're here because you may never be back.  At least not until we take Rory on her whirlwind these-are-the-places-we-went-when-you-were-little tour.

Hvar was beautiful.  Absolutely gorgeous.  Clear blue water and sunny skies.  I'd go back.  Tomorrow, if I could.

A typical day on vacy:
  • Awake sometime in the 7:00 hour (though I did run at 6:45 two mornings).
  • Breakfast buffet at the hotel.  Rory ate watermelon, yogurt and sausage every day.  And there was apple cobbler/crumble on the buffet every morning.  Yes, I had it every morning because when else am I going to get that for breakfast?
  • Apply the sunscreen and head to the pool.
  • Playtime in the pool.  And some reading time for me!
  • Lunch by the pool or at a restaurant down the way along the beach.
  • More pool time.
  • Nap time:  three times in the room, twice at the pool, and once on the beach.  My child taking a good nap somewhere other than her crib.  I was stunned.
  • More pool time if we could squeeze it in!
  • Then we'd shower and get dressed for...
  • Supper, shopping, and wandering around downtown.
  • Ice cream, just about every night.
  • And finally a later than usual bedtime -- why she napped so well.
Tuesday was our eighth anniversary so we decided to do something a little special.  We took a taxi boat out to one of the islands that is just off the shore of Hvar.  The beaches of the island were much less crowded than the Hvar beaches.  I keep wanting to call it a deserted island, but there was a bar located on the island.  We walked around the island a little bit and then set up our camp along the water in an area near some trees so that we could also have some shade when we wanted it.  We'd stopped at the grocery store for food and  we had a picnic lunch while on the island.  We played in the water.  The water was cold and there wasn't really a beach there, lots of rocks instead, but we splashed around in the clear water.  We all wore shoes to protect our feet.  We also played with Rory's beach ball and a small kite that folds into a small pouch.  Rory had a great time with the kite, though the wind was not cooperating.  After napping on the rocks (Rory and me) we played a bit more and then took the taxi boat back to Hvar.  We stopped for drinks in town, a smoothie for Rory and mojitos for Stepler and me, before heading back to the hotel.

Since it was our anniversary we ate in one of the nicer restaurants affiliated with our hotel that was located right on the ocean.  A beautiful place and the food was good too.  More on the food in a bit.  Rory was a very good dininig companion throughout the trip and her crayons and a sheet of paper were enough to keep her occupied while we waited for food.

Croatian food:
  • It was very good.
  • Croatian cooks believe bones, skin, and shells should be left on to improve flavor, that or they are lazy.
  • The pizza was very good.  Thin crust, good sauce and yummy toppings.
  • Fish, fish, and more fish.  But none at the breakfast buffet, as in Norway.
  • Gregada is a Croatian specialty.  It's a fish stew with potatoes, parsley, and lemon.  But again, a lot of work.  Fish have so many bones.  And I get extra nervous when have to pick fish for Rory.
  • There is also a version of the fish stew with tomatoes.  I think I liked it better.  Pretty sure I definitely would have liked it better if I'd had it at the same restaurant where we had the gregada.
Rory on vacay:
  • She was amazed that it got dark each night.  Amazed.  She commented on it every night.  And in the morning would comment that it wasn't dark anymore.  What is she going to think this winter when it is dark by 5pm each night?
  • The water slide is a lot of fun.
  • Fountains are also a lot of fun.
  • As much fun as she had on vacation, she was very glad to be home again.
